Manufacturing Hand Sanitizers for the People of Kenya

May 14, 2020

Diversey East Africa is working with Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), Kenya Wines Agency (KWAL) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on a Government initiative to supply hand sanitizer to the most remote communities in Kenya.

The importance of good hand hygiene has been at the forefront of measures which can help to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2. However, the provision of running water is still a challenge to many communities in the informal settlements and rural areas of Kenya. It is therefore critical to ensure that when people are not washing their hands they have an adequate supply of sanitizers.

The Government asked its institutions to take up the responsibility of manufacturing and distributing sanitizers to all the 47 counties of the Republic of Kenya.  Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) approached Diversey and Kenya Wine Agencies Ltd (KWAL), to explore the possibility of working together to drive forward this project: KWAL would provide the ethanol; Diversey would process and manufacture the sanitizer; and KPC would provide the packaging, labels and distribute the free sanitizers.

The first batch produced over 40,000 litres of sanitizer and has been making its way to the people of Kenya since mid-April. The manufacturing collaboration will continue with further batches planned.

The initiative was featured in local news media including PD Online.
